Is it too much to dream of a system of health care where you, the patient, enters in through a single door to be heard, assessed, diagnosed, and treated, holistically, practically, efficiently and intelligently by a team of professionals that coalesce around the answer?

For over  35 years, my various partners and I have been on an entrepreneurial journey to make the healthcare world, to borrow a term...better.

​

In the early 80's our quest began by tackling pharmaceutical care, which led to the founding of our nation's first Specialty Pharmacies.  The psycho-social-financial model we created fundamentally changed the way that high-cost high-touch medications were managed, paid for, supported and delivered....which led to demonstrable improvement in medication compliance and related patient outcomes.  This made it better.

In the mid 90's we understood that scaling a learning healthcare system was the way to continuously drive improvement.  This led to the development of the first Internet-based healthcare learning management system.  We scaled education to millions of healthcare professionals...which led to demonstrable improvement in provider knowledge, and more importantly the sustained application of that knowledge in the delivery of patient care. We reduced the 17 years that it normally takes from best practice discovery, to wide application in practice, to mere months. This made it better.

In the early 00's we recognized that the learning healthcare system could be enhanced by scaling clinical patient registries to capture "what happened" in the patient journey.  Combined with performance measures of cost, quality, safety, coordination of care, and the patient voice, we were able to specifically, at an individual system or provider level, identify performance gaps and link these gaps to learning interventions and systemic improvement innovations.  This fostered a continuous cycle of personalized and systematic improvement...which led to a complete learning healthcare system with demonstrable improvements via comparative performance analysis, professional self-awareness, system/provider knowledge and sustained patient outcomes.  This too made it better.

Throughout the 10's, with the advent of value-based care, we combined this learning healthcare system platform with the reporting tools needed to help providers fully engage in the shift from volume to value.  The use of clinical registries, measurement, gap analysis, reporting tools and learning brought us full circle in building a learning healthcare system that has spawned dozens of real-world initiatives...at scale...each of which has demonstrated improvement in performance, provider engagement, patient care and outcomes. Yes, this too made it better.

So, with all this success...why do we Quest on?  Why Quixote Health? 

​

Well...because apparently despite all the progress...it's not nearly enough! 

 

My own daughter's journey in the healthcare system over the past 7 years, with my wife and I at her side, is a testament to the dysfunction, disparate knowledge, performance gaps and lack of coordinated care that persists.

 

It's sad, it's expensive, it's maddening, it's heartbreaking...and dare I say, I constantly wonder what people who don't understand the healthcare system do to give their children a chance at a healthier, better life. If we are on a journey this difficult, I wonder if others even understand where they might begin.

    

This is why we created Quixote Health.  And, this is why we journey on.
